Southern Tanzania Safari & Udzungwa Hiking Package Prices 2026-2027

Southern Tanzania safari and Udzungwa hiking package prices for 2026-2027 typically range from $2,500 to $7,000+ per person for a 7-14 day trip, depending on accommodation style, safari duration, Udzungwa hiking intensity, group size, and inclusions. These packages often combine the wild, less-visited parks of the Southern Circuit with multi-day treks in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, offering a unique blend of wildlife viewing and active exploration.

Understanding Southern Tanzania Safari & Udzungwa Hiking Package Costs in 2026-2027

Planning a trip that combines the rugged, untamed beauty of Southern Tanzania’s safari destinations with the lush, biodiverse landscapes of the Udzungwa Mountains requires a clear understanding of package pricing. For travelers looking to experience these unique areas in 2026 and 2027, knowing what influences costs is crucial for budgeting and selecting the right itinerary. Climb 4 Africa offers tailored packages designed to provide an authentic Southern Tanzanian adventure, balancing wildlife encounters with invigorating mountain hikes.

The Southern Circuit, often referred to as the ‘less crowded place’ of Tanzania’s safari circuit, includes parks like Selous Game Reserve (now Nyerere National Park), Ruaha National Park, Mikumi National Park, and the lesser-known Kitulo National Park. These areas offer vast, unspoiled wilderness, teeming with wildlife but with far fewer tourists than the Northern Circuit. Complementing this are the Udzungwa Mountains, a haven for hikers and nature lovers, boasting unique flora and fauna, including endemic primates and diverse birdlife. A combined Southern Tanzania safari and Udzungwa hiking package provides an unparalleled opportunity to witness Tanzania’s natural wonders in their most pristine form.

When considering Southern Tanzania safari and Udzungwa hiking package prices for 2026-2027, several key factors will shape the final cost. These include:

  • Duration of the Trip: Longer trips naturally incur higher costs due to extended accommodation, park fees, and transport.
  • Accommodation Standards: Options range from rustic tented camps and budget lodges to more luxurious permanent camps and lodges.
  • Safari Parks Visited: Nyerere and Ruaha National Parks often have higher park fees and operational costs due to their remoteness.
  • Udzungwa Hiking Intensity: Multi-day treks with camping will differ in cost from day hikes.
  • Mode of Transport: Whether you opt for a 4×4 safari vehicle or a combination of flights and ground transport.
  • Group Size: Private tours are generally more expensive per person than joining a small group departure.
  • Inclusions: What meals, activities, park fees, guides, and internal transfers are covered in the package.

Climb 4 Africa specializes in crafting these bespoke experiences, ensuring that your 2026 or 2027 adventure is both memorable and well-budgeted. We aim to provide transparent pricing, detailing what is included so you can make informed decisions.

To help you gauge potential costs, let’s explore common itinerary structures for Southern Tanzania safaris combined with Udzungwa hiking and their typical price ranges for the 2026-2027 travel seasons. These are indicative and can be fully customized.

Budget-Friendly Explorer (Approx. $2,500 – $3,800 per person for 7-10 days)

This tier focuses on value without compromising the core experience. It’s ideal for solo travelers, couples, or small groups looking for an authentic adventure on a tighter budget. This is the most popular tier, offering a balance of comfort, authentic experiences, and excellent value. You’ll stay in comfortable lodges and well-appointed tented camps, often with en-suite facilities and excellent service. This tier allows for deeper exploration of more remote parks and more extensive hiking in the Udzungwa Mountains.

  • Safari Parks: Ruaha National Park (renowned for its large predators and vast landscapes), Nyerere National Park (for boat safaris and diverse wildlife), Mikumi National Park.
  • Udzungwa Hiking: Multiple days of hiking, potentially including treks to the Mwanihana peak or multi-day camping expeditions.

For those seeking the utmost comfort and exclusivity, this tier offers high-end lodges and luxury tented camps, often with private plunge pools, gourmet dining, and exceptional personalized service. This allows for a more relaxed pace and access to exclusive wildlife viewing areas and guided experiences.

  • Safari Parks: Extended stays in Ruaha and Nyerere National Parks, possibly including private conservancy areas if available.
  • Udzungwa Hiking: Guided multi-day treks with comfortable fly-camping setups, private guides, and potentially specialized activities like birdwatching tours.
  • Accommodation: Luxury lodges and tented camps, often with private bathrooms, elevated amenities, and stunning locations.
  • Transport: 4×4 safari vehicle with a dedicated guide, or a combination of light aircraft flights between parks and lodges for maximum efficiency and comfort.

  • Exclusions: International flights, visas, tips, personal expenses, premium alcoholic beverages.

Ideal for: Honeymooners, discerning travelers, and those celebrating special occasions who desire a premium experience. This is the pinnacle of Southern Tanzania safari and Udzungwa hiking packages for discerning travelers in 2026-2027.

Key Cost Drivers for Southern Tanzania Safari & Udzungwa Hiking Packages

Understanding the specific elements that contribute to the overall price of a Southern Tanzania safari and Udzungwa hiking package is essential for making informed choices. For 2026-2027, these factors remain consistent:

1. Park Fees (Conservation Fees)

Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) set daily park fees. These are significant costs, particularly for:

  • Ruaha National Park: Known for its rugged beauty and large predator populations, Ruaha typically has higher park fees than Mikumi. Fees are generally around $30-$40 per person per day, plus a vehicle fee.
  • Nyerere National Park (Selous): Fees are similar, often around $30-$40 per person per day, plus vehicle and concession fees if applicable.
  • Mikumi National Park: Generally more accessible and thus slightly lower fees, around $20-$30 per person per day.
  • Udzungwa Mountains National Park: Fees are structured differently, often including an entrance fee, camping fee if applicable, and a fee for armed rangers accompanying hikers on certain trails. Expect around $30-$50 per person per day for park entry and basic hiking permits.

Note: These figures are subject to change by the authorities. Climb 4 Africa keeps track of the latest fee structures for 2026-2027 planning.

2. Accommodation Costs

This is one of the most variable cost components. Prices differ dramatically:

  • Public Campsites: Basic facilities, often around $10-$30 per person per night. Used in budget itineraries, especially for Udzungwa camping.
  • Tented Camps (Mid-Range): Comfortable, often with shared or en-suite bathrooms, around $100-$250 per person per night.
  • Lodges (Mid-Range to Upper Mid-Range): Offering more amenities, private bathrooms, and sometimes pools, ranging from $150-$350 per person per night.
  • Luxury Tented Camps/Lodges: High-end facilities, private bathrooms, gourmet food, exclusive locations, typically $300-$800+ per person per night.

3. Transportation

Getting to and around Southern Tanzania and the Udzungwa Mountains involves specific costs:

  • 4×4 Safari Vehicles: The standard for safaris. Daily rates for a vehicle with a driver-guide can range from $200 to $400 per day, inclusive of the driver’s expenses. This cost is shared among passengers.
  • Internal Flights: To reduce long driving times to parks like Ruaha or Nyerere, light aircraft flights are an option. These can cost between $250-$500 per person per leg. They significantly increase the package price but save considerable time, especially on shorter trips in 2026-2027.
  • Transfers: Airport transfers and transfers between locations add to the cost, typically included in package prices.

4. Guide Fees

Professional safari guides and Udzungwa hiking guides are essential. Their fees are usually incorporated into the package price. For Udzungwa, armed rangers are often required for certain trails, and their fees are also factored in.

5. Activities and Excursions

The type and number of activities included significantly impact pricing:

  • Game Drives: Standard in safari packages.
  • Walking Safaris: Often available in specific areas (e.g., Selous/Nyerere, Ruaha) and may incur an additional fee.
  • Boat Safaris: A highlight in Nyerere National Park, usually included.
  • Udzungwa Hiking Treks: Multi-day treks with camping equipment and crew will be more expensive than day hikes.

6. Seasonality

While Southern Tanzania is a year-round destination, prices can fluctuate slightly:

  • Peak Season (Dry Season): Generally June to October. Accommodation might be slightly higher, and booking well in advance for 2026-2027 is advisable.
  • Shoulder/Green Season: November to March (with a break in April/May for heavy rains). This period often offers good value and fewer crowds, with lush landscapes. Wildlife viewing remains excellent, especially in Ruaha and Nyerere.

Comparing Southern Tanzania Parks for Your 2026-2027 Adventure

The Southern Circuit offers distinct experiences, and understanding their characteristics helps in choosing the right parks for your safari component. This directly impacts your Southern Tanzania safari and Udzungwa hiking package price.

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve)

  • Size: One of the largest reserves in Africa.
  • Wildlife: Known for its large elephant and buffalo herds, wild dogs, hippos, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife. Less dense predator populations than Ruaha but still offers excellent viewing.
  • Activities: Famous for its boat safaris on the Rufiji River, walking safaris, and game drives.
  • Landscape: Diverse, with miombo woodlands, open grasslands, and the vast Rufiji River system.
  • Accessibility: Can be reached by road from Dar es Salaam or by light aircraft.
  • Cost Impact: Moderate to high, due to its size and popularity for specific activities like boat safaris.

Ruaha National Park

  • Size: Tanzania’s largest national park.
  • Wildlife: Renowned for its large populations of elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, and a high concentration of wild dogs. Excellent for predators.
  • Activities: Primarily game drives, walking safaris (in certain areas), and photography.
  • Landscape: Dramatic, with rugged hills, vast plains, and the Great Ruaha River, which becomes a crucial water source in the dry season.
  • Accessibility: Best accessed by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam or other safari hubs due to its remoteness. Road access is long and challenging.
  • Cost Impact: High, due to its remoteness, higher park fees, and often requiring internal flights, making it a premium component of any Southern Tanzania safari and Udzungwa hiking package.

Mikumi National Park

  • Size: Relatively small compared to Ruaha and Nyerere.
  • Wildlife: Easy to spot wildlife, including large herds of zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, elephants, and buffaloes. Lions are frequently seen.
  • Activities: Game drives.
  • Landscape: Open plains and miombo woodlands.
  • Accessibility: Easily accessible by road from Dar es Salaam, making it a convenient stop.
  • Cost Impact: Lower, due to easier access and slightly lower park fees, often included in budget or shorter itineraries.

The Udzungwa Mountains National Park: A Hiker’s Paradise

The Udzungwa Mountains form part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a biodiversity hotspot. They are unique in Tanzania for being primarily a forest reserve, not a typical savanna wildlife park. This makes the hiking experience distinct and highly rewarding.

Key Hiking Trails and Experiences:

  • Sanje Waterfall Trail: The most popular hike, leading to impressive waterfalls cascading over 100 meters. It offers stunning views and opportunities to see primates like the red colobus monkey. Duration: 3-5 hours round trip.
  • Prince’s Trail: Leads to a beautiful waterfall with a natural swimming pool. It’s a moderate hike through dense forest. Duration: 3-4 hours round trip.
  • Mwanihana Peak Trail: A more strenuous, multi-day trek reaching one of the park’s highest peaks. This is for experienced hikers seeking a challenge and remote wilderness experience. Requires camping.
  • Lumemo Trail: A challenging trek that can take several days, often involving camping, and leading to more remote areas of the park.

Udzungwa Hiking Considerations:

  • Fitness Level: Trails range from moderate to very strenuous.
  • Guides: Mandatory for all trails. Armed rangers are required for longer or more remote treks due to potential wildlife encounters (though rare).
  • Accommodation: Options include basic campsites within the park (requiring your own gear or arranged rentals), or lodges/guesthouses in nearby villages like Mang’ula or Ifakara. Multi-day treks often involve fly-camping.
  • Best Time to Visit: The dry seasons (June-October and December-February) are generally best for hiking, though the forest remains lush year-round.

The Udzungwa component significantly enhances the value and uniqueness of a Southern Tanzania safari and Udzungwa hiking package, offering a physically engaging contrast to the safari drives.

Serengeti River Crossing: A Wild Spectacle
Emily R. · Canada · 30 Jun 2026

The 7 Days Serengeti River Crossing Safari was an unforgettable experience. Witnessing the wildebeest migration bravely crossing the Mara River was awe-inspiring and a little heart-stopping! We had excellent game drives, spotting lions, elephants, and numerous bird species. Our guide was fantastic at finding the best viewing spots. While the river crossing is the main event, the Serengeti itself is teeming with life. The lodges were comfortable, though a couple were a bit more basic than expected for the price. Still, the wildlife made it all worthwhile. We're considering another safari in 2026.
