Marangu Route Introduction

What Is the 6-Day Marangu Route?

The Marangu Route is one of Mount Kilimanjaro's most established trekking trails and the only standard route that uses permanent huts instead of camping tents.

The trail begins and ends at Marangu Gate, following a direct path through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and the summit zone.

The six-day itinerary includes an additional day at Horombo Hut for an acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rocks.

This extra day gives climbers more time to adjust before travelling from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut at more than 4,700 metres.

The route remains physically demanding, particularly during the long summit day from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and back to Horombo.

Recommended For

  • Climbers who prefer huts instead of tents.
  • First-time Kilimanjaro trekkers.
  • Travelers wanting an acclimatization day.
  • Solo travelers joining affordable departures.
  • Couples and private small groups.
  • Travelers combining Kilimanjaro and safari.

Trek Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate for registration, porter weighing and final mountain preparations.

Begin walking through humid montane rainforest, where the trail may be muddy after rainfall.

Reach Mandara Hut in the afternoon. A short walk toward Maundi Crater may be possible when time, health and weather permit.

Distance Approximately 8 km
Walking Time 4-5 hours
Accommodation Mandara Hut
Trek Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Leave the rainforest and continue through heath and open moorland.

Walk at a slow pace while gaining approximately 1,000 metres of elevation.

Clear weather may provide views of Kibo and the rocky Mawenzi summit.

Arrive at Horombo Hut, rest, eat well and report any altitude symptoms to the guide.

After breakfast, complete a controlled acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge, depending on the guide's plan and trail conditions.

Walk to a higher elevation before descending to Horombo Hut for lunch, hydration and recovery.

The climb-high and sleep-lower approach helps the guide assess each climber's response before continuing to Kibo Hut.

The landscape becomes increasingly exposed, with limited vegetation, cold wind and strong sunlight.
